No Istanbul club for the first time since 2010: Trabzonspor is Turkish champion

The 2: 2 against Antalyaspor has been determined what has been initiated for weeks, if not months: Trabzonspor is the new Turkish champion. There are nine points ahead of "pursuers" Fenerbahce three game days before the end - the direct comparison in the Süperlige was a trabzonspor (3: 1/1: 1).

Since 1985, the master has not only come from the most populous city in Turkey once. When Bursaspor broke through the overwhelming dominance of the Istanbul clubs, Schalke and Bremen landed in the Bundesliga behind Master Bayern Munich - and Hertha BSC rose as the bottom of the table with only 24 points. Since the 2009/10 season, Galatasaray has been five times, Besiktas three times, Fenerbahce twice and Basaksehir at the top.

But there was also a time of the rebellion. And that is very closely linked to trabzonspor. The traditional club was the first champion of the Süperlig, who was not from Istanbul in 1959. Until 1984, the popular club from the Black Sea won the most important national title five more times.

discipline and efficiency as trumps

The Sound of Istanbul - Gölge (Club Remix) Because Trabzonspor marched through the league this season, the former Turkish international and today's TV expert Ridvan Dilmen predicted in such a way: "You are 97 percent masters." And he was right.

The team of coach Abdullah Avci had the longest offensive as well as the best defensive (only 31 goals) of the Süperlig, but trabzonspor stands for spectacle. Discipline and efficiency distinguished the Turkish champion. One of the ten Ü-30 professionals in the squad is the former Bundesliga professional Yunus Malli, who, however, only took on a supporting role (seven missions, seven substitutions).

top scorer Cornelius - Galatasaray chipped off

Others are offensive: Top scorer Andreas Cornelius (15 goals) was one of the trump cards on the way to the title that Dane scored against Antalyaspor on Saturday. Marek Hamsik or Anastasios Bakasetas also played key roles in AVCIS team. Trabzonspor distanced the competition from consistently good results. At the winter break, the traditional club was already 14 points ahead of Fenerbahce.

Galatasaray undoubtedly has the greatest catching up to do the Istanbul clubs, which even has to fear in the top 10 at all this season. From now on, the new Turkish champion will be the hunted - especially since the squad needs renovation in the short to medium term.

Club boss Ahmet Agaoglu announced with a view to his aging stars months ago: "The actual work only begins after the championship." Then it can start now.
